I'm working with yeast, so no tissue culture hoods or anything. Apparently, the selective media I'm using for growing the yeast only really exerts selection on the yeast itself, and doesn't really affect random bacteria that might appear in the culture.

You'll get used to it pretty quickly! I'm not sure that it's much different from organic chemistry lab work in that most of it is common sense. You just have to get used to the idea that you are the primary contamination source (bacteria, fungi, etc.), and also that your safety is as important as the cultures. Are you using tissue culture hoods? Those are one of the few parts of lab work that I actually find enjoyable.
